Version 2.0
A major release built on months of work: a brand-new Optimizer that searches for your best withdrawal and Roth-conversion strategy, true amortizing mortgages and property sales, a far deeper tax engine, Canada out of beta, and a smoother, clearer experience throughout.
Items marked Can change your numbers are accuracy corrections that may shift the projections of existing plans. In every case the new numbers are the correct ones, and each item explains who is affected.
The Optimizer
The biggest addition in 2.0: a dedicated tool that searches for your best withdrawal order and Roth-conversion strategy, shows you exactly what changes and why, and lets you apply it with one click.
Find a better strategy, then put it to work New
The Optimizer is the single home for Roth conversions and tax-aware withdrawal planning. It runs many strategy candidates, ranks them, and explains the trade-offs in plain language.
- Smart strategy search: compares withdrawal orderings and conversion plans, then presents a ranked winner with the projected lifetime gain.
- Roth conversions, reimagined: "Fill to an income limit" can target a tax bracket, an IRMAA tier, an ACA subsidy cliff, or a custom AGI, all inflation-aware, with a per-year preview table.
- Coordinated levers: fill a bracket with Roth conversions, with extra pre-tax withdrawals to cash, or both together.
- Tax-efficiency warnings: surfaces IRMAA, NIIT, ACA, and RMD-opportunity advisories so you can see where money is leaking.
- See it clearly: strategy charts show how each year fills up, account drawdown, taxes with and without the plan, and withdrawals by source.
- Plan status at a glance: a dashboard indicator tells you whether your applied plan is active, current, or out of date, with one-click on and off.
- Conversion-ladder awareness: models the 5-year rule and flags early withdrawals of unseasoned conversions.
- Works beyond the US: non-US mode optimizes withdrawal order and, for Canada, pension income splitting.
Bigger, more realistic planning
2.0 models far more of real financial life: homes and mortgages, market uncertainty, and a much more accurate tax picture.
Real estate and mortgages NewCan change your numbers
True amortizing mortgages replace the old straight-line paydown, with linked HELOCs, reverse mortgages, refinancing, and property sales (including capital gains and the Section 121 exclusion). Home equity is derived live from value and balances, so plans with financed properties see more realistic equity and payoff timing.
The Chance of Success tab New
Monte Carlo simulation now lives in its own dedicated tab with percentile bands, spaghetti and individual-year views, a retirement-outlook bar, and spending guardrails, separate from the cleaner Manual dashboard.
A far deeper tax engine Improved
NIIT, IRMAA with its 2-year lookback, Social Security taxation, the OBBBA senior bonus, refreshed federal brackets, 27 updated states with credits and local taxes, and an inflation-indexed pipeline throughout. Plus a new per-source "Effective Brackets" breakdown showing what each income source really costs you.
Canada support Improved
Pension income splitting, GIS, year-indexed federal data, the federal rate cut and BPA phase-down, the corrected 50% capital-gains inclusion, age and pension-income credits, and a rebuilt tax popup that shows credits the way the CRA applies them. Canada graduated out of beta.
College expenses, now connected FixedCan change your numbers
College costs for up to three children now actually flow through the simulation. Tuition was previously shown in the interface but never subtracted from the portfolio. Payments can be spread across the year, taken as a lump sum, or split by semester, with tuition inflation and source-account routing.
Flexible extra withdrawals New
Each extra withdrawal can now be spread across the year or taken as a single lump sum in a chosen month, useful for one-time purchases and gifts.
Smarter tax planning
Social Security pre-claim COLA New
Benefits can grow with cost-of-living adjustments before you claim, with a configurable COLA-versus-inflation offset.
Per-source tax attribution New
See how much tax each income source actually carries, with a sortable table and a stacked chart that splits every bar into the after-tax and tax portions.
A smoother, clearer experience
Dozens of interface refinements make the app calmer, more consistent, and more pleasant to use day to day.
Beautiful chart animations Improved
Graphs now morph smoothly from old values to new when you move sliders or toggle Today's / Future Dollars, including stacked-bar and area charts, which used to snap instantly. Monthly charts also use a lighter draw while dragging for snappy performance.
Today's Dollars everywhere Improved
The Today's / Future Dollars choice now carries through to the data table and the tax-details popup, not just the graphs.
Dark mode and a consistent layout New
A full dark theme, plus unified page widths, card shadows, and spacing across Accounts, Optimizer, My Plans, Community, Estate, Budget, and Progress.
Redesigned panels and dropdowns Improved
The Social Security claiming panel and the Retirement Spending year-detail view were rebuilt to be clearer and more visual, and dropdowns across the app share one consistent, animated style. A refreshed My Plans page and country-comparison segmentation make managing and contrasting scenarios easier.
A welcome for phone visitors New
Phone visitors get a tailored entry experience: send yourself a link, create an account, or log in, instead of a cramped desktop layout.
Behind the scenes
- Email deliverability: audience lists, throttled sending, bounce handling, and a global unsubscribe that every promotional send respects.
- Preview mode: registered-but-unpaid users get a tasteful preview of premium dashboards.
- Security hardening: two rounds of security hardening plus a content-security-policy cleanup.
- More resilient plan storage: sturdier saving and loading of plans.
Notable bug fixes
Several of these had been silently skewing projections. Fixing them makes results meaningfully more accurate.
Medicare premiums were not being deducted FixedCan change your numbers
The base Part B and Part D premium was displayed but never withdrawn from the portfolio for ages 65 and up. It is now charged, making later years realistically more expensive.
The investment-income surtax (NIIT) computed to $0 FixedCan change your numbers
The net investment income tax was effectively never applied in simulations. It is now live whenever income crosses the threshold.
Maryland retirees were over-taxed for years FixedCan change your numbers
A dead configuration key meant the Maryland pension exclusion for 65+ never applied. Corrected, along with a spurious Wisconsin full exemption.
Roth "fill to bracket" showed $0 conversions FixedCan change your numbers
When spending was funded from Roth, the optimizer under-filled the bracket and reported no conversion. It now measures your real taxable income, prices the conversion at your real marginal rate, and fills to an inflation-indexed ceiling.
0% cash interest grew anyway FixedCan change your numbers
A cash account set to 0% APY was quietly growing with inflation. 0% now means flat, with a clearer "Tracks Inflation" default.
Chart polish Fixed
- The Net Worth chart's monthly view could show an empty negative band after a slider move even with no liabilities; the axis now floors at zero unless real liabilities exist.
- The dollars toggle and slider drags snapped or jittered on several charts; they now animate smoothly and consistently.
- Fixed the Tax Amounts chart rescaling mid-animation, and a "needs update" indicator that appeared incorrectly when visiting the Chance of Success tab.
This is a representative summary rather than an exhaustive changelog. 2.0 also includes many smaller refinements across the tax data, UK support, spending modes, and the 4% rule.
